Calle's
essay judged first in state contest
Matlock
teen Jimmy Calle wrote the best composition
in the state in the Washington State Law
Enforcement Association's annual eighth-grade
essay contest.
The
Mary M. Knight student earned $500 for
his award-winning essay in the theme 'Why
I Will Say 'No' to Alcohol and Drugs."
Andrea
Evans, another MMK eighth-grader, won
third place at district and $100. Maureen
Mrosla teaches both students.
The
law-enforcememnt association divides the
state into districts for its contest and
awards cash prizes to first, second and
third places in each district in addition
to the state grand prize of $500. This
is the eighth year for the contest.
Information
on the contest was sent to 520 public
schools and 280 private schools, according
to Mike Matson, WSLEA executive vice president,
who said 173 essays were received.
Matson
said he plans to present the cash awards
to Calle and Evans at a school assembly
sometime after spring break. "I don't
like zero-sum games because the students
are all winners. In every contest there
are people who do extra-special work and
they should get special recognition,"
he said.
This
is the second time Calle has achieved
statewide recognition for his skills.
Last
year, after placing first at state with
his cooking demonstration, he became the
youngest Mary M. Knight student to make
his way to the national level of Vocational
Industrial Clubs of America action skills
competition. He took "Top 10"
honors in the National Skills USA-VICA
Education Team 2001 Leadership and Skills
Conference held in June 2001 in Kansas
City, Kansas.
