Deputy Sheriff Matt Herzog of Whatcom County Sheriff's Office was killed Thursday, September 13th, 2001, in an automobile accident while he and his trainee pursued a vehicle. The officers had responded to a prowler call and began to chase the vehicle after it sped past them at a high rate of speed. During the pursuit the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree on the passenger's side, where Deputy Herzog was sitting. The driver of the vehicle they were chasing was later apprehended. He had been with the agency for five years and is survived by his wife.
